Quieted by His Love

A Devotional by Nina S. Jones

Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalm 46:10

Have you ever needed someone to quiet you down before you even realized how loud you’d gotten?

I had a different devotional ready to go out this week — already written, already scheduled. But something happened on an ordinary weeknight that felt too true to sit on, so this one is jumping the line.

Elbows Deep

Dinner was in motion, and so was I — watermelon under the knife, a salad half-built, a grocery order that had come up short on fish. I sent my husband back out for more and kept moving the way I do once I’m locked into cooking: hands busy, three steps ahead in my head.

Across the kitchen, my phone lit up. I dried my hands and answered to nothing — just silence on the line. A few hellos, nothing back, so I hung up and tried again. Same silence. I set the phone down, and the second I picked my knife back up, it rang again. This happened four times. Every single time I resettled into what I was doing, the phone pulled me right back out, and every time, neither of us could hear a word the other said.

Pipe It Down a Notch

By the fourth call, my patience had worn all the way down. When I finally answered, I answered loud — loud enough that the connection actually held. He heard the edge in my voice, and instead of matching it, he stayed level. Plainly, without any heat behind it, he said, “I’m gonna need you to pipe it down a notch.” That was the whole sentence. But something in me settled instantly. Turns out all he needed was to make sure he grabbed the right fish. I described the packaging, we hung up, and that was that.

I stood at that sink afterward, watermelon juice still on my hands, replaying his words and laughing to myself. And without really planning to, I started talking to God right there at the counter — thanking Him for a husband who meets me with that kind of steadiness no matter how worked up I get.

The Full Circle

When he finally walked in, I couldn’t wait to tell him what one sentence had done for me. That’s when he told me the rest of it — he’d left the house without his glasses and had spent the whole trip squinting at fish labels he could barely read, just as rattled by our broken connection as I was.

He would have been within his rights to snap back at me. Nobody would have blamed him for it. Instead, forgetful and frustrated in his own way, he chose the same gentleness he always does. I believe that’s a small picture of something much bigger.

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love.

Zephaniah 3:17

That’s the part that stays with me. God doesn’t need volume to bring us peace. He doesn’t have to match our frustration to reach us. His love does the quieting on its own.

A Word Just for You

What gets me most is that gentleness was optional for my husband at that moment, and he chose it anyway. That’s what grace actually looks like up close — not a feeling, but a decision made in real time, usually when nobody would have faulted you for choosing otherwise.

I know how often I show up to God frazzled myself — praying mid-rush, mind still scattered across everything I’m carrying — and He never once matches that energy back at me.

So here’s what I keep circling back to: when someone near you is short-tempered, not because of you but because life has them stretched thin, what do you hand them back? Your own frustration, or the same gentleness that’s been extended to you more times than you could count?

Your Grace Check

Name a recent moment when someone chose gentleness with you they didn’t owe you. Now name a moment you had that same choice with somebody else. Sit with which one you actually chose — and ask God to help you choose differently next time, however small the moment seems.

A Grace Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing me Your patience through the ordinary people You’ve placed in my life. Thank You for meeting my frustration with quiet instead of correction. Teach me to offer that same gentleness to someone else today, especially when I’d have every right not to. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
