When God Meets You in the Rain

Have you ever tried to outrun something God was actually trying to give you?
I didn’t realize that’s what I was doing the morning I ran out to grab a few things from the grocery store. I had forgotten some items I needed for dinner — nothing dramatic, just a quick errand. But the moment I stepped out my front door, the sky opened up and it started pouring. I mean pouring. And my first reaction? Pure dread.
I grabbed my umbrella, got in my car, and started driving — flip flops and all — fully prepared to be annoyed the entire trip.
But somewhere between my driveway and the store, something shifted.
I started thanking God. Not because the rain stopped — it didn’t. But because something in my spirit just turned toward gratitude. I found myself praising Him for His new mercies, for His provisions, for His goodness — right there in my car with the windshield wipers going a mile a minute.
And then I really started to see the rain.
I noticed how it fell on the grass, the trees, the flowers — how without it, none of that beauty would be possible. How the animals out in the fields need that rain just as much as we do. How the rain isn’t separate from God’s goodness.
The rain is God’s goodness — showing up in a way I almost missed because I was too busy dreading it.
The Promise in the Rain
I was also reminded that sometimes after the rain, God leaves us a reminder of His promises in the form of a rainbow. And that is not a coincidence. That is not just a science fact about light and water. That is Him — still keeping His word, the same way He did all the way back with Noah.
In Genesis 9:12–17, after the flood, God gave Noah the rainbow as a sign of His covenant — a promise that He was not done, that He keeps His word. Verse 13 says:
I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

The same God who kept that promise to Noah is the same God who met me in a grocery store parking lot in the pouring rain. He is still speaking. He is still keeping His word. And He is still showing up in the most ordinary moments of our lives — if we are willing to look for Him there.
Puddles on My Toes
By the time I pulled into that parking lot, something in me had already changed. I got out, umbrella in hand, and because I had on flip flops, I could feel the rain on my toes. And instead of rushing to avoid it — I let myself feel it. I let myself take it all in.
That same rain I had been dreading twenty minutes earlier had brought me closer to God.
And on my way back out to the car — I purposely splashed in the puddles. Right there in that parking lot, wet toes and all, I laughed out loud. A real, genuine, from-the-belly laugh.
It’s just so amazing to me how God will take the smallest moment — a grocery run, a pouring rain, a pair of wet flip flops — and turn it into a whole message just for you.
Grace in the Ordinary
Here is what I want you to sit with today:
Grace isn’t just the thing that saves us in our biggest, most dramatic moments. Grace is the thing that meets us in the parking lot. In the rainstorm. In the moment we were all ready to dread instead of receive.
Grace doesn’t wait for us to get in the right mood. Grace doesn’t hold out until the sun comes back out. Grace shows up on our windshield wipers, on our toes, in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday errand — and it whispers, “I’m still here. I’m still good. My mercy is still new — today, this morning, right now.”
That is what Lamentations 3:22–23 is saying to us. His compassions don’t run out. His mercies don’t expire. They are new every morning — which means no matter what yesterday looked like, today He is showing up fresh. Today He is still faithful. Today there is grace available for whatever you are walking through.
A Word Just for You
I wonder how many of you are avoiding your own version of rain right now.
Maybe it’s a hard conversation you keep putting off. Maybe it’s a doctor’s appointment you’ve been dreading. Maybe it’s just another day that feels heavy and you’re simply trying to survive it — when really, God might be waiting to meet you right in the middle of it.
I’m not saying every hard or annoying thing is secretly a blessing in disguise. But what I am saying is this — what would happen if you stopped bracing for the rain and started looking for God in it?
What would it look like to feel it on your toes instead of just running from it?
Grace isn’t always about the sunshine and everything being picture perfect. Grace is knowing that God will always be standing right there with you in the middle of your storm. Not ahead of it waiting for you to catch up. Not behind it watching from a distance.
Right there. In the middle of it. With you.
Your Grace Check
Take a moment today and ask yourself:
What is the “rainy” moment in my life right now that I’ve been dreading instead of receiving?
Write it down. Sit with it. And then ask God to show you what He might be doing right in the middle of it. Because I believe with everything in me that He is already there — waiting for you to look up, open your hands, and let the rain fall on your toes.
A Grace Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the moments I have spent dreading what You were actually trying to give me. Teach me to look for You in the ordinary. Help me to find Your mercy in the mundane and Your faithfulness in the frustrating. Remind me today that Your compassions are new — right now, in this moment, for whatever I am facing. Let me feel Your grace on my toes. In Jesus’ name. Amen. 💛
